Farm Practices

What does ‘regenerative farming’ mean?
Regenerative farming is about giving back to the land more than we take. We use methods that improve soil health, promote biodiversity, and reduce waste while producing high-quality food. At Huckleberry Farms, this includes practices like deep bedding in our bird coops, which provides a healthy environment for the birds while creating nutrient-rich compost for our gardens. We compost organic waste, including bedding, manure, and food scraps, to enrich the soil and minimize waste. We also support natural wildlife habitats by leaving brush piles and plant stems in place over the winter to shelter birds, insects, and other wildlife. Our birds are free-range, allowing them to forage, scratch the soil, and control pests, which naturally enhances soil health. Additionally, we rotate grazing areas to prevent overuse, promote pasture recovery, and reduce soil erosion. These practices help us create a sustainable, thriving ecosystem that benefits the land, our animals, and our community.

Do you use antibiotics or hormones?
We do not use added hormones, and antibiotics are only used as a last resort when absolutely necessary to ensure an animal’s health and well-being. Any animal treated with antibiotics is removed from production and either becomes part of our personal food supply or is moved to breeding stock. Rest assured, none of our eggs or meat products will ever contain traces of antibiotics or hormones. We prioritize preventative care and natural, healthy environments for all our animals.

How do you handle sustainability on the farm?
Sustainability is at the core of what we do at Huckleberry Farms. We use compostable materials, such as egg cartons that can be added to compost instead of landfills, and actively limit waste by composting bedding, manure, and food scraps to enrich the soil. Our rotational grazing and free-range practices prevent overuse of the land, promote natural behaviors in our animals, and enhance soil health without artificial inputs. We also preserve natural habitats by leaving brush piles and plant stems intact during winter to support wildlife and insects. By thoughtfully managing resources like water and maintaining efficient systems, we create a self-sustaining ecosystem that supports the environment and ensures a thriving farm for future generations.
