If you give a homesteader a bumper crop of root vegetables, they’re going to want to store them properly.
They’ll start by layering carrots, beets, and parsnips in sand.
Storing them in sand will remind them that potatoes need burlap sacks.
Finding space for sacks will lead them to reorganizing the pantry.
While reorganizing the pantry, they’ll decide to pickle some carrots to save space.
Pickling carrots will remind them that they could also make carrot and apple jam.
Making jam will inspire them to freeze some crushed garlic, since they’re already preserving everything.
But eventually, every shelf, drawer, and cupboard will be overflowing with vegetables.
And when they realize there’s nowhere left to put the next harvest…
They’ll decide they need a root cellar.
And chances are, if they build a root cellar…
They’re going to want even more root vegetables to fill it
