If You Give a Homesteader a Snowy Morning

If you give a homesteader a snowy morning, they’ll bundle up to go do chores.

First comes collecting eggs, then feeding and watering the chickens.

Checking the frozen water will mean hauling the waterer out to dump the ice.

Dumping the ice will send one quick chicken darting into the yard.

Chasing the chicken will leave a trail of boot prints through the snow.

Following the boot prints will take them past the rabbit hutches—

Where they’ll realize the hay is running low.

Fetching hay will remind them to check the feed bins for mice.

Checking the bins will uncover a chewed corner and a scattering of oats.

Cleaning up the oats will make them think of oatmeal for breakfast.

Thinking of oatmeal will remind them to grab wood for the stove.

So they’ll pick up a few pieces on the way back inside.

But with eggs in one pocket and firewood in both arms…

They’ll hear a soft crunch and realize—

They forgot about the eggs.

Hi there! I’m Traci, the heart and hands behind Huckleberry Farms. As a regenerative farmer, mother, and advocate for sustainable living, I’m all about growing food that’s good for people and the planet. Every day on our farm, we’re exploring new ways to honor old traditions, care for our animals, and regenerate the land. You’ll often find me writing about our journey, sharing honest insights into the ups and downs of farm life, and hopefully sparking conversations that inspire us all to think a little deeper about the food we eat and the world we live in. Thanks for being part of our community—I’m so glad you’re here!
