If you give a homesteader a cold morning, they’ll check the wood rack on the porch.
Seeing it half-empty will send them to the main pile to refill it.
While hauling wood, they’ll uncover a cluster of grubs nestled in the bark.
Finding grubs will remind them the chickens would love a snack.
Feeding the chickens will lead to checking for eggs.
Checking for eggs will remind them the chickens haven’t had breakfast yet.
Feeding the chickens will cause one to slip past their boots and dart into the yard.
Chasing the runaway chicken will lead to a standoff by the compost pile.
The standoff will end with the chicken disappearing under the porch.
Waiting for the chicken to return will remind them to feed the rabbits.
Feeding the rabbits will take them past the woodpile again,
And they’ll decide to grab a few more pieces on the way back inside.
But with eggs in one pocket and firewood in both arms…
They’ll hear a soft crunch and realize—
They forgot about the egg.
And chances are, by the time the sun sets…
That chicken will be waiting by the coop like nothing ever happened.
