Farm Table Talk: You Are What You Eat—And It’s Killing Us

Pull up a chair, friends. Let’s talk about what’s on your plate—literally and figuratively.

We live in a nation where grocery store aisles are stocked with endless options, where fast food is cheap and convenient, and where Big Food tells us their products are “part of a balanced diet.” But here’s the real question: Is it food? Or is it something designed to look, smell, and taste like food, while quietly wrecking your health from the inside out?

Let’s call it what it is: edible food-like substances. These ultra-processed “foods” aren’t just unhealthy; they’re engineered to be addictive. Big Food hires scientists to manipulate salt, sugar, and fat levels to keep you coming back for more. They even design textures to trigger your brain’s reward centers. And it’s working—because we keep buying, eating, and wondering why we’re always hungry, always tired, and always sick.

The result? Obesity rates have tripled since the 1970s. Diabetes is at an all-time high. Chronic diseases linked to diet are bankrupting families. Is this just a lack of willpower? Or is it a system designed to profit off people’s misery?

Big Food doesn’t just make money selling you junk; they’ve teamed up with Big Pharma to create a vicious cycle. Eat the processed garbage, get sick, take the pills, rinse, repeat. It’s a billion-dollar industry feeding off our ignorance and addiction.

Here’s the truth: You deserve better.

What’s on your plate right now? If it came from a box, a drive-thru, or a microwave, ask yourself: Do I know what’s in this? Can I pronounce the ingredients? Would my great-grandmother recognize this as food? Processed food isn’t just bad for your waistline; it’s bad for your brain, your heart, your energy levels—your entire life.

But it doesn’t have to stay that way. Here on the farm, we believe food should nourish your body, not destroy it. We raise our animals and grow our crops in ways that prioritize health, sustainability, and respect for the natural world. When you buy farm-fresh eggs, pasture-raised meat, or homegrown produce, you’re not just eating better—you’re fighting back against a system that thrives on your suffering.

Cook one meal from scratch this week. Need a recipe? Check out our Farm to Table Recipes for inspiration, or explore our digital cookbook for even more ideas. Swap one ultra-processed snack for something real, like fruit or nuts. Visit a farmers’ market, ask questions, and reconnect with where your food comes from.

This isn’t just about your health; it’s about the future. The way we eat shapes the world we live in. Processed food destroys not only our bodies but also our land, our water, and our communities. Choosing real food is an act of rebellion. It’s saying, “I deserve better. My family deserves better. The planet deserves better.”

Because you are what you eat. And if you wouldn’t want to be made of it, you probably shouldn’t be eating it.

Until next time,
Traci

Hi there! I’m Traci, the heart and hands behind Huckleberry Farms. As a regenerative farmer, mother, and advocate for sustainable living, I’m all about growing food that’s good for people and the planet. Every day on our farm, we’re exploring new ways to honor old traditions, care for our animals, and regenerate the land. You’ll often find me writing about our journey, sharing honest insights into the ups and downs of farm life, and hopefully sparking conversations that inspire us all to think a little deeper about the food we eat and the world we live in. Thanks for being part of our community—I’m so glad you’re here!
