The Circle of Farm Life: Preparing for the Year Ahead

Eat Local. Live Wholesome. Cherish Traditions.

Introduction

Just like that repetitive song you can’t get out of your head (Baby Shark, anyone?), the farm life goes on in a never-ending, yet always changing, circle. From sowing seeds when spring fever hits, to embracing the crisp charm of autumn harvests, every season brings its unique rhythm. So, as we bask in the glow of February’s short days and long nights, let’s take a whimsical journey through the forthcoming farming calendar, Huckleberry-style.

February – Breaking Up with Winter

As Valentine’s Day looms, it’s not just chocolates and roses that occupy our minds, but prepping for the sowing season. Winter’s cold grasp is still evident, but beneath the surface, life stirs. It’s time to go through seed catalogs, daydreaming of the bountiful harvests ahead. And maybe, just maybe, starting a few indoor seedlings. Because why wait for spring?

March – Spring Fever Hits Hard

March: when winter starts ghosting us, and spring is eagerly sliding into our DMs. We start the transition from planning to planting. The soil is warming up, and so are we. Into the ground go the early crops – peas, lettuce, radishes. Oh, and if you hear someone at Huckleberry Farms singing to the plants, mind your own business. It’s called encouragement!

April – Nature’s April Fool’s Jokes

April showers bring… unexpected frosts? Nature often plays its own version of April Fool’s on the unsuspecting farmer. So, while we’re busy transplanting, we’re also on frost watch, ready to shield our budding babies from any cold surprises.

May – Dance of the Ducklings & More

May sees the farm bursting with life. Our precious ducklings and chicks make their debut, demanding both our attention and constant “awwws”. It’s a dance of nurturing, planting, and growing – and not just for the flora!

June – The Days of Sun and Sweat

June, the official start of summer and the unofficial start of “Wow, I didn’t know I could sweat there” season. Crops are growing taller, and so are the weeds. It’s a battle of the fittest out there. The farm stand preps for opening, promising fresh offerings and maybe a sunburn or two.

July – Harvest Hoedown

Our hard work (and singing) pays off as early crops are ready for harvest. July is when we play hide and seek with zucchinis and marvel at how a tiny seed transformed into a feast. Nature, you sly fox!

August – Basking in the Bounty

Ah, August! A time when you can almost hear the tomatoes ripening. Our on-farm stand is bustling, and let’s face it, it’s a great time to drop by and experience the vibrant colors, tantalizing tastes, and the occasional farmer’s tan.

September – Autumn’s Prelude

As summer starts waving goodbye, September nudges us to prep for the cooler days ahead. It’s a race against time: harvesting, preserving, and maybe sneaking in a pumpkin-spiced something because we’re basic like that.

October – Fall-tastic Times

October is all about those gorgeous fall harvests. The vibrant oranges, reds, and yellows aren’t just in the trees; they’re in our produce too! Plus, as the air turns crisp, nothing beats biting into a fresh apple or navigating a corn maze with all the grace of a lost toddler.

November – Thankful & Thoughtful

As we pull the last of the crops from the fields, we’re filled with gratitude. November is a time for reflection, appreciation, and maybe drafting a “How to Survive the Holidays” plan. It’s also a prime time to enjoy some hearty farm-to-table meals. Anyone for roasted root veggies?

December – Dreaming & Hibernating

With the fields asleep, December is our “me time”. We reflect, plan, and dream about the year ahead. But let’s be real: it’s also about feasting, festive fun, and making resolutions we might keep.

In a Nutshell…

There you have it – the dizzying, dazzling circle of farm life at Huckleberry Farms. Through highs, lows, and unexpected snows, it’s a ride we wouldn’t trade for the world.
